Softball update

I played my third game of the season last night. We crushed the opposition pretty soundly, and I led the charge with a 4-4, 4 run, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B performance. The downside was that the fields were at the top of Potrero Hill, which is an unfortunately tall hill, and we had to ride our bikes up it. The upside is that we got to ride back down victoriously, but we couldn’t find a route that allowed us to take a lot of longer, not-so-steep downhills, so we had to just ride the brakes down some steep ones.

Also of note is that this coming weekend I’ll be playing ultimate in Santa Barbara. Its been too long since the last time I was there, and its been too long since I played in a tournament, so it bodes to be a great weekend all around. I may even play again on Monday up in Marin county. Its about time I got back in shape, since the club season is starting soon. Summer is the best season ever.

Good thing I picked up that Omaha habit

Just booked my new biggest winning session ever, and hilariously it was all pot-limit Omaha (a game I’ve played no more than 5k hands of lifetime) instead of the game I’ve spent the last 4 years mastering. How about that?

Cap PLO is great, since its chock full of gamblers and Europeans. So all you have to do is be a little more selective than they are and steal a few pots here and there and you can win lots of monies. Over the course of the session, I won 32 pots over 2k. Thats ridiculous. (I lost 21 of them, too!).

I wish there was a good EV calculator for PLO so I could tell exactly how much over expectation I ran, but perhaps I’d be just as well not knowing, heh. I do think most of the time I got it in pretty well, so it was more often a matter of dodging their outs rather than hitting my own.

Here’s a few fun hands:

New 2 biggest pots ever

Decided to take a shot at 50/100 today, since there were a few games going (which is very rare). They seem to be built around this charlet guy, who was playing quite loose-aggressive preflop but never folding to 3bets and playing somewhat passively postflop.

Weeeeeeeeeee

Softball Season is back!

I play on my roommate’s company softball team (as a ringer). I bat leadoff (since I have like a .900 OBP and can switch-hit and place my hits wherever I want on the 2/3 of the field I’m hitting towards, generally with enough velocity that only the best fielders can catch them even if they’re close enough) and play defensively in left center field, where all the good batters hit fly balls (since I’m fast enough to run them down and also have enough of an arm to gun dudes down at home after they tag up. But I don’t usually try it since usually our catcher is, strategically, the worst glove-person on the team and will undoubtedly bobble the throw or get hurt by trying to get in the way of my Rex Grossman cannon arm). Today was our second game of the season. I missed the first game last week when I was in Seattle, unfortunately, but my season debut tonight was fairly impressive.

We started the game at 6:45 or so, which was a little bit late considering the sun-going-down factor. We were the visiting team, so I led the game off with a strong line drive to right field which landed nowhere near the fielders and ran it into a double when the right fielder couldn’t handle my blazing salvo. To be fair I could probably run just about any outfield hit into a double, but since our team has a pretty strong 2-6 in the lineup and there were no outs I would normally be content with a single. In fact, thats precisely what happened to lead off the 3rd inning in my next at bat. I swung down at a high outside pitch and drove a sizzling line drive between the pitcher and the shortstop, but stopped at first. After both hits I was easily driven in to home by the next few batters without any drama, of course.

In this league, theres a cap on the number of runs per team per inning (7) mostly to prevent blowouts and allow both teams to play at least a reasonable number of innings. So after 2 innings, we were down 13-4 or something like that. In the 3rd we put up the full 7 runs, and then held them to only a few, so going into the 4th inning we were down 15-11. The sun was beginning to set over the horizon of the nearby neighborhood rooftops, so this would probably be our last inning of the night. After the first two batters from the bottom of our lineup grounded out (our opponents had a surprisingly solid defensive infield), the last guy managed to knock down a hard infield single which brought me to bat, with the game on the line and, finally, with a duck on the pond. The first pitch was lobbed right into the sweet spot, low and across the plate, and I pulled it over the entire cadre of right fielders (when I bat lefty, as I usually do, the outfield traditionally pulls over all the way to the right to try and stop me. Sometimes I close my stance a lot to try and send one opposite field on them, but in softball its hard to do that since the pitches are so slow; that attempt usually ends up in a droopy Texas-league single over the shortstop). In rec league softball any ball hit over the outfield is pretty much an automatic home run, but I wanted to make sure so I booked it around to second before the third base coach told me I could take it easy and then trotted in from there. The heart of our lineup rose to the occasion and went on a great rally, finishing up with 6 runs total. And in the bottom of the 4th, with the evening creeping in, we closed them out without a run to seal the deal. Victory!

Season stats: 3-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI
